Excellent, secure, stable, Unix-like server operating system, descended from AT&T UNIX via the Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) branch. As of version 5.0 FreeBSD contains not a single character of AT&T code (a good thing).
The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software.
Excellent—and my favourite—desktop operating system based on Debian. Xubuntu uses the XFCE Desktop Environment by default (hence the 'X' in its name) but other great GUIs are available for installation from the Ubuntu software repositories by way of Xubuntu's package manager. If you're in or near S/W Ontario, you can download a copy of Xubuntu from my Xubuntu mirror. Otherwise download at xubuntu.org/get.
Gentoo is a free operating system based on either Linux or FreeBSD that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.
Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else -- whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability, Gentoo is called a metadistribution.
gNewSense is a GNU/Linux project that aims to remove all the non-free software from Ubuntu and Debian to make a 100% Free (libre) Software distribution.
