Civil Liberties is the name given to freedoms that completely protect the individual from government. Civil liberties set limits for government so that it cannot abuse its power and interfere with the lives of its people.
Below is the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms which defines the highest laws in Canada. No other law, politician, court, or law enforcement official may violate the Rights and Freedoms therein. The rest are United Nations treaties (guaranteeing Civil & Human Rights) of which Canada is a signatory and in most cases helped draft.
